Owls are so popular right now. I didn't want to write up an actual animal hat pattern since there are many out there plus I love the one I have already. So I thought I'd try my hand at something different.
This is my person pattern and I don't mind if you sell items made from it but please don't copy and steal the pattern. Please just link back to my sight! Thanks ;)
OWL APPLIQUE PATTERN:
Materials:
Size F Hook (3.75 )
Worsted Weight yarn - I used "i Love This Yarn: Hobby Lobby brand"
Tapestry needle
RD 1 : ch 10, sc in 2 ch from hook, sc in each ch across with 3 sc in last ch, continue around to opposite side of ch, sc in each ch to 1st sc and join w/ sl st
RD 2: ch1, sc in same st, ch 5, sl st in same sc, sc in next 7 sc, ch 5, sl st in same sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 10 sc , ch 1 turn
(rest of applique is worked in rows)
Row - 1 sc in next 9 sc, ch 1, turn (9)
Row 2- 6 sc in each sc across, ch 1 , turn (9)
Row 7 sc dec, sc in next 5, sc dec, ch1 turn
Row 8 sc dec, sc in next 3, sc dec, ch1 turn
Fasten off, weave in ends
eyes: make 2
ch 3 , 8 hdc in 1st ch, join with sl st to 1 hdc
Sew on eyes - close together between the ears/horns, I then used black thread to make a few embroidery stitches for the pupal.
Beak - embroider on in a triangular shape in between the eyes.
Feet - Make 2
Row 1: chain 4, se in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, ch 1 turn (3)
Row 2: sl st in 1st sc, ch 3 sl st in same sc (3 times)
fasten off, weave in ends
Sew feet to applique.

Hello, I love your pattern! I was wondering how you attach your applique to your crochet project? I am have trouble finding a tutorial on this. Thanks!
Hi Heather! that is a great question. It will depend on what your sewing it to.
I use a tapestry needle and same color yarn as main color.
If you put it on a hat , When I attach appliques I usually sew around the outside edges of the applique when attaching. I make a stitch per row and it usually hides it pretty well. For more effect you could use a contrasting color and have it stick out more like embroidery.
If you're attaching it to a headband I would sew the edges of the applique closest to the headband and a stitch or two in the middle of the applique For a good hold
I think I will write up a better tutorial for this with pictures in weeks to come. So If that was really confusing I'm sorry. I'll have something better later if you follow my blog :)
Thanks! This is really helpful. I am looking at putting this applique on an afghan that I have crocheted. I will try sewing it on and see how visible the stitches are. Have you ever tried any of those iron-on heat bonds? It makes me nervous to iron anything with acrylic yarn (which I normally use), but maybe on low heat with a towel or something. Cheers!
@ Heather- Your very welcome. I've not tried iron on but I would suggest maybe using a cotton yarn instead. If you do try it let me know how it comes out. I'm willing to bet the towel and iron would do the trick with the acrylic.
I want to make pins for jackets with this applique. Now I want to stiffen it. Would starch spray work?
Hello. I love your pattern!! I started to make it right away and then ran into some bumps. I'm having trouble with round 2. I can't seem to get the owl's ears. There's also a typo, but I believe it is a sl st. Any extra help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks.
@ anonymous -Thanks for pointing out the typos. I've fixed round 2 and should make more sense, The ears are done like picot stitches if your familiar with those.
