I recently found this fun stitch called the Key Tab on "The New Stitch a Day" website. I fell in love with the texture so I decided to write up some free patterns with it. This is the 1st in a series! I hope you will enjoy these new patterns as much as I do. I think these will make perfect Christmas gifts or just a perfect fall accessories!
My inspiration for this pattern came from a new coat I recently purchased. I wouldn't normally pick mustard color anything, but my hubby insisted and It's my new favorite!
This hat is currently only sized pre-teen to women's, but it's very easy to change the sizing up or down. Just make sure you do your ribbing row counts in a multiples of 4. It features a fun button tab add on. It's totally optional as it's added on at the very end for embellishment.
This pattern was tested by my amazing testers! A big thank you to them as always!
I used Lion Brand's Heartland yarn. Which is becoming a new favorite. It's color ways are vibrant but multi tonal for dimension. Its a lighter worsted more like simply soft but I think its so much better to work with. Be sure to check your gauge with heavier worsted weight yarn but it's a slouchy that is meant to fit a little bigger.
I can't wait to see your hats!

What a great stitch and a beautiful pattern. Thanks so much for making it a free one.
Thank you Carolyn! Your very welcome! Enjoy!
Fantastic slouchy and so easy to make up!!!
Thanks so much for the pattern! This hat is really pretty. Now to pick what color... :)
I really like that stitch you used, I will definitely give it a try. It works very well with the basic brim, and the accent of buttons is great. Adorable hat. :)
I love this hat! I am working on one in Navy blue using Caron Simply Soft.
Congrats on being featured on All Free Crochet!
Thanks! Here is my Ravelry page for mine: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/bethintx/key-tab-slouchy
I also took the stitch pattern and am making a small cowl.
When working the rounds in the body of the hat the rounds end with "turn." Do you really turn at the end of each round?
Yes you will need to turn and work the other way.
I am a little stuck on Round 15 of the hat body section This round involves (3dc cl) and (3dc cl dec) this is the text for Rd 15: *(sc, ch 3, 3dc cl) in next ch 3 sp, ch1, (sc, ch 3) in next ch 3 sp, 3dc cl dec over (same ch 3 sp, ch 1 sp and next ch 3 sp), ch 1 rep from * around to last ch 3 sp, (sc, ch 3, 3dc cl) in next ch 3 sp, ch 1, join with a sl st to 1st sc, ch 2, turn (7 - 3dc cl, 6 - 3dc cl dec )
Where I am confused is I began in the first chain 3 space and did the regular (3 dc cl) then when I move on I am working in the next chain 3 space and the chain 1 stitch and the next chain 3 space to complete the (3dc cl dec) Correct????? So I end this in a chain 3 space and it then states ch 1 and repeat.
My question is when I begin to repeat am I moving in a new chain 3 space?????
It just seems weird to me
Amanda- Yes you'll move on to the next ch 3 space. I sounds like you are doing it right. Someone else suggested that if the decreased doesn't make sense you could also just go down hook sizes repeating row 3 until it's small enough that you can cinch the top shut. Just another options if you get stuck :)
I used a size 5mm hook and doing the 76 rows in the beginning seems way too big. Is it just me? Does it come together and fit a lil snugger as you work along? I know its supposed to be loose fitting but it just falls. It doesn't stay on my head.
HI Megan! If it's too big, which it might if you have a smaller head like me! Just take out rows in multiples of 4. So try it with 72 or 68 maybe instead. The dec rounds might work out a little differently with less stitches in the body of the hat but I can help if you get stuck!
Ok Thank you so much. I guess I could've just asked in what multiples to increase or decrease. I just couldn't come up with how to word it. Thank you so much.
I made this hat and have gotten tons of compliments on it! Thank you so much for sharing the pattern! Can you tell me what multiple of stitches are needed for the clusters? My brain doesn't do math very well and I'd like to try a matching scarf.
Actually, I just noticed your cowl pattern and that would do just fine.. ignore my question above!
I really tried to do this pattern but I am just getting back into this and did not understand all the directions and had no tutorial to show me. When I get better and understand more terminology with crocheting I may try it again. Thanks
Its more intermediate. Dont give up. There is a Video on how to work the key tab stitch in the post which may help some.
Hi, I'm about half way through the body of the hat, with the 3dc clusters. Is there a way to increase with this stitch, to give it a little more fluff? I'm trying to figure it out, but don't want to mess it up!
The easiest solution would be to go up a hook size or two for more "fullness"
