She asked designers to make up some new patterns with a zoo theme and I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I didn't want just a basic hat. I wanted it simple detail but with special touches. I decided on a Tiger Cub!! My testers really enjoyed this project and many of them are planning on donating there hats and a few more to the cause too. I'm so glad they decided to get involved to.

Skill Level: Easy
Materials : Worsted Weight yarn in colors of choice. I use Vanna’s Choice in Rust and Black
H - 5.00 mm hook
Tapestry Needle
Gauge swatch- approx. 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 inches
Row 1: Ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st,
hdc in next 2 sts, ch 1 turn,
Row 2: hdc in 1st, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, hdc in last st, ch 1, turn
Row 3-4: repeat row 1&2
Row 5-6: repeat row 1&2
Preemie Tiger Hat
Approx. measurement laying flat - Height 4 1/4” x width 6” - 12 inches around
Made to fit about a 4-5 lbs. preemie (born around 32-36 week gestation)
*Note - There will be a color change every row. Do not fasten off. Change to opposite color and leave the old color to the side as you will pick it back up on the following row.
*Be sure to follow pattern closely.
The wavy stitch pattern will not work evenly if you get off a stitch. :)
With Rust
Round 1: ch 2, 10 sc in 2nd chain from hook, join with sl st to 1st sc (10)
Change to Black
Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in 1st sc, sc & hdc in next sc, *(hdc & dc in next sc, 2 hdc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc & hdc in next sc,) repeat from *1 more time, join with sl st to 1st sc (20)
Change to Rust
Round 3: ch1, 2 hdc in 1st st, dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st, *(2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st,) Repeat from * 1 more time. join with sl st to 1st hdc (30)
Change to Black
Round 4: ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, hdc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, join with sl st to 1st sc (40)
Change to Rust
Round 5: ch1, hdc in 1st, *(dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts,) repeat from * 3 more times, dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in last st, join with sl st to 1st hdc (40)
Change to Black
Round 6: ch 1, *(sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts,) Repeat from *4 more times, join with sl st to 1st sc (40)
Round 7-8: repeat rounds 5-6
Round 9-10: repeat rounds 5-6
Round 11-12: repeat rounds 5-6
Change to Rust:
Round 13: ch1, sc in each st around, join with a sl st to 1st sc (40) Fasten off, weave in ends.
Ears: Make two
With Rust
Round 1: ch 2, 4 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook, join with sl st to 1st sc (4)
Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, 2 dc in joining st from previous round (10) DO NOT JOIN, ch 1, turn
Row 3: hdc in 1st 2 sts, 2 hdc in next 6 sts, hdc in last 2 sts (16)
Fasten off orange and weave in ends. Leave a long tail 10-12 inches for sewing ear to hat
Join black with sl st where you fastened off last,
*(make sure you are turned to the front of your work)
Row 4: sl st in each st across (16) Fasten off and weave in ends.
Sew ears to hat. approx. row 2-6

Hey there! Out of curiosity, does the final stitch count at the end of each row include the stitch the chain is in? Thanks!
The chan stitch isn't counted in the final count.
