So my hubby has been obsessed with me making slouchy hats for him lately. I've been looking for the perfect slouchy hat pattern and tried a few but wasn't really meeting exactly what I was looking for. I was being lazy and didn't want to work out a pattern for myself but I was inspired by some lovely new yarn I saw at Michaels. It's called Vanna's Choice Twists. You don't get much in a skein it's only 2.5 oz but the colors are gorgeous. There are 6 fun color twists to choose from. I went with the Twilight that is Deep charcoal with light grey, dusty blue, purple, and dark mauve multicolor wrap. I bought 2 skeins and had enough to make my hat and a matching one for Calleigh. She was pretty excited & I love this hat.
I hope you enjoy this pattern. It's really simple and I think it has the perfect amount of slouch. If you want super slouchy just add a few more rows of the dc. This hat is perfect for guys and gals. I'll try to get pics of the hubby in his slouch soon ;) I made him one with some awesome Neons from Hobby Lobby's I love this yarn.

Yarn: Worsted Weight
In sample pictures I used Vanna’s Choice Twists in Twilight (it only comes in 2.5 oz about 121 yards) - You will need 2 skeins for the Adult or 1 skien for the Kids size if you use this.
Regular Vanna’s Choice solids come with 3 or more ounces so you will only need 1 Skein if you get that. Approx 130 for the Adult.

Thank you for the pattern. I'm working on it now and it's very easy.to follow. Can't wait to see the finished product! ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is just the kind of hat pattern I have been looking for. Can't wait to make it. I have been crocheting hats for everyone else and I never take the time to make one for me! I love Vanna's Choice yarn but have not seen the new one you have used. Going to Michaels and Hob Lob next week to see what I can find! Thanks for sharing your pattern. :) Diane
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm trying to teach myself crochet via online tutorials. I have a difficult time reading patterns and counting stitches. I have to say that this is the best looking item I've crocheted. It looked great. Thanks so much for this pattern : )
ReplyDeleteLinda
Linda - I'm so glad this worked out great for you! Keep on crocheting!
ReplyDeleteThis pattern is wonderful! I made three - two in red and one light purple - and each one made up in no time and I have only the best things to say about this pattern. I made one for my sister-in-law, one for a friend, and one for myself. This will be a favorite for sure!
ReplyDeleteA really nice pattern! But I am slightly confused. Rows 19 - 23 say to sc in each sc around. And then Ros 24 is exactly the same. Should it be this way?
ReplyDeleteA really nice pattern! But I am slightly confused. Rows 19 - 23 say to sc in each sc around. And then Ros 24 is exactly the same. Should it be this way?
ReplyDeleteHi Darlene, Row 24 is the same. Just the way I did it since you fasten off that row.
ReplyDeleteHA! I just finished a hat JUST like this. Happened by mistake but i was questioning the look of it even though I thought it was cute. Seeing yours gave me the lil validation that I needed. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat Pattern.
ReplyDeleteCan this be made in a smaller size? I would love to make one for my 15 month old granddaughter. If you have any ideas how to tweak the pattern I would very much appreciate it.
Do the toddler size with a smaller needle, I ?
DeleteVery easy pattern to make in several hours. Looks just like my pattern for a version like yours that I use Chunky yarn for. Glad to see what yours looks like.
ReplyDeleteOH I would love a chunky version - Do you have a link to your pattern Kathy :)
ReplyDeleteVery easy pattern to understand. Made one In no time at all. Thank you for the pattern! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is the first hat I have ever crochetted and it was great! So easy and came out perfect! My daughter loves it and now I am going to make one for another daughter! Thank you soooo much for a great and easy pattern. I used Lion Brand Tweed Stripes and loved it.
ReplyDeletehey
ReplyDeleteyou post a very good post about Calleigh's Clips & Crochet Creations.nice post.
Ana
Ok, I would LOVE to try this pattern, but leave it up to me to get confused on the very first instruction. :P It says to chain 3 and then dc 10 in the third ch from hook, but shouldn't I join the three chains and do the dcs in the ring since we're doing a round? Maybe I'm insane because it seems like everyone is doing fine. :/
ReplyDeleteOh my word I feel so dumb now! I just reread it and I understand. :P sorry about that! Never mind! Thanks for the great pattern!

ReplyDeleteHey! Can i do this pattern using the same size crochet hook the whole time?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteHi Stella - You can but you'll need to adjust the bottom sc rows (decrease the stitches to fit your desired head size or it will be to big. ~Elisabeth
ReplyDeleteI know you say this is for personal use only, but what about charity use? I found some Red Heart Gumdrop (super fun colors!) and thought this pattern would look great for some donated hats to St. Louis Children's Hospital.
ReplyDeleteIt's not stated anywhere that this is personal use only. You are welcome to do whatever you like with the finished product. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, sorry, I've looked at so many hat patterns today that I must have gotten mixed up!
ReplyDeleteWow good insturcton. Thank you so much.
ReplyDeletecrochet hats for women
Thank you so much for posting this pattern, I have tried several others and just can't find what I was looking for. This is a simple to follow pattern easily adapted to make them for adults (which is almost impossible to find) I have 4 sons and they love it, my husband liked this too.
ReplyDeleteI am new to crocheting and I would like to make this for my grandson who is 7 months old. How do I go about making it smaller?
ReplyDeleteI made the child's hat, and it turned out pretty good considering it's my first hat. It seems more like a beret than a slouchy hat, though. I'm wondering, when you state in the instructions starting at Row 7 to dc in each dc (rather than in each st), do you mean to dc around the post of each dc, or poke the hook through each post of the dc? That may have been where my interpretation may be off. I poked through each post. Kind of awkward, but it worked.
ReplyDeleteYou should be working on top of the stitches in the front and back loops as normal. Not between stitches and not around or through posts. Could also be written dc in each st around, instead of dc in each dc.
ReplyDeleteI have been looking for a cute, but 'masculine' type pattern that would be appropriate for my 2 year old nephew (he's mature for his age - LOL). I have another 'universal' slouch hat, but it just looks waaaaaaaay too feminine for Parker (I have made about 5 or 6 of that patter for the female gender) so I can't wait to try this one. Thanks for the exacting instructions, etc.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this pattern. My niece is a beginner crocheter and she wants to try a hat. She is just learning to read patterns so I think this pattern will be great for her!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your pattern - I'm definitely going to make one.
ReplyDeleteAre the numbers in the parenthesis for the "adult" version, while the original instruction is for a childs size?
ReplyDeleteI would also love the pattern for 12 months. Can you tell me how I should work that out? Thank you so much for this pattern and I can't wait to try it for these sizes also.
ReplyDeleteI do not have it currently worked out in other sizes but it's on my list to do soon since I've had a lot of people ask :) Currently I would just start the hat the same as the kids size but take out a few rows. On the brim you'll need to decrease it down to approx 54-56 stitches.
ReplyDeleteJust have to say love this pattern. Easy and very nice making them for my granddaughter ,s
ReplyDeleteI have been searching ALL day for a pattern for a hat that would fit an 8 year old! And now, right before calling it a night, I finally found your site!! I'm so excited to wake up tomorrow and make this hat for my niece!! THANK YOU!!!
ReplyDeleteJodi I'm so glad you found it! I hope you love it :)
ReplyDeleteLove this pattern gonna get it worked up when I come home from work :)
ReplyDeleteMy friend wants me to make her a hat with a hole in the back for her ponytail to come out does anyone have any suggestion or ideas
ReplyDeleteLove this pattern! I'm pretty new to crochet and this was so easy to follow! Got it finished in about a day or two (with kids and house work that's pretty good!) Haven't tried it on my little man yet but I'm sure it will be fine. Thanks so much for this amazing pattern!
ReplyDeleteI love this pattern. I had been searching for a slouch pattern that was quick and easy to follow and this is the perfect pattern. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteHow can I make this for a bigger head? My husband and son, well, they have big heads...;).
ReplyDeleteIf you need it larger I would say first try the brim in the K hook instead of changing. If it's too big then add a few decreases till its the size you need.
ReplyDeleteCouple solid hours and you'll have this great hat. Ty for the pattern. I wish I could sent uba pic. Bc ibuse this pattern all the time and have several lovely hats and some made lovely gifts.
ReplyDeleteOne of the easiest hat patterns I have done! And it looks great too. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! So glad you love it!!
DeleteI started this hat and its my first crochet hat. I'm on round 8 and it looks like a doily? Is that right or am i missing something
ReplyDeleteJessica - If you have the right amount of stitches keep going! :) Sounds like you are doing fine. Now that you are done with the increase rounds it should start to take shape on the repeat rounds.
ReplyDeleteDo I not need to start with a "magic circle"? I'm still learning and want to make sure I get it right.
ReplyDeleteWhat size yarn is best to use?
ReplyDeleteI did not use the Magic Circle method in this pattern (I don't prefer it) Just start dc in the 3rd ch from the hook as stated :) It will work promise.
ReplyDeleteI used Worsted Weight yarn for the pattern.
ReplyDeleteIn medium?
DeleteI'm not sure what you mean by "medium" - Worsted Weight yarn is a (4)
ReplyDeleteIs this by chance written in uk terms? Is it hdc usa terms maybe? Mine is very long
ReplyDeleteMarie - No it's American English. If it's too long for you, maybe down a hook size or simply remove a few rows.
ReplyDeleteI just got thru copying this pattern. I hand write all my patterns,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I wonder if SantanClaus will bring me printer ink? Merry CHRISTmas to everyone!!
ReplyDeleteThis is great! I made one, and it looks good, but looking through the comments I'm now confused. when I dc into each dc (and sc into sc, for that matter), should I only be yarning over, bringing my hook through the front of each dc, and finishing the dc as usual, or should i be going through both the front and the back, and dc-ing as usual?
ReplyDeleteIn patterns, then, how do I know when to go through both? or just the front? The back is always stated, from what I can tell, but I've seen ones where they go through just the front and just say to dc (or sc). Thank you!!
Usually in crochet you will work through both loops unless otherwise stated.
DeleteIt would have special instruction like ( working in front loops only or working in back loops only)
Thanks for this simple yet lovely crochet beanie pattern. I am new to crochet and this is my first ever project. I was to crochet the toddler size but end up fitting mine which is a happy surprised :)
ReplyDeleteOk, I'm still confused. I'm new to crocheting and would love to make this hat. You say to sl st each round into the first stitch of the round. But the first instruction is ch 3 and 10 dc in 3rd ch. Do I sl st together and then do the 10 dc in the circle or do I not create the circle and put all 10 dc in 3rd chain. I'm sorry to sound so dumb, but I hope you can straighten me out. I want to make for a Christmas present. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi! You'll join at the end of r:1 so ch3, work 10 Dc in the 3rd chain from the hook then join with a sl st to the 1st dc to make a circle. If you are familiar with a magic ring this isn't that method.
DeleteDo we have to use those exact hooks? Or could we use like an E hook for example?
ReplyDeleteIf you use a smaller hook you would just need to make sure you match gauge or it will be a lot smaller depending on your tension. You would likely have to crochet a lot looser.
DeleteI love this pattern. I too do no t like the magic circle and this is a great pattern for all levels and it quick to complete! Thank You.
ReplyDelete..
I am new to crochet and am not quite understanding how the slip stitch fits in. The way that I understand it is that I do the sl st and then chain is that correct?
ReplyDeleteI made 4 hats so far in the last 3 days and love this easy Pattern.. thanks a lot
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are enjoying it! :)
Deletegoing to make one for a man now.. hope it turns out ok .. going to do the same as ladies size just a bigger neddle.. was going to send you pictures but do not know where to send them Elisabeth Spivey
ReplyDeleteAwesome. Good luck. You can post them to my Facebook page or email them to me calleighclips@att.net
DeleteHi Elisabeth .. I sent E- Mail with pictures of hats I made.. hope you get them.. if not I will post to your facebook page
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletejust made one with Chunky yarn .. used a 600mm neddle and only did 9 rounds .. love it and it is so warm & cozy
ReplyDeletehaving trouble with row 4, more than 40sts. what am I doing wrong
ReplyDelete1st thing I'd do is check to make sure you have the correct amount of stitches in round 3. Feel free to email me for further help.
DeleteLove this pattern! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeletethanks for this pattern. I am using it for my charity hats and using up my stash! thanks again!
